RichPen • Fuso Seiki Co., Ltd.
Seventy Years of History. A New Chapter for RichPen.
To create airbrushes that stir the heart. That is RichPen's mission.
Our Roots in Japan
The roots of Fuso Seiki reach back to the years following World War II. Our founder, Shigeru Kuwabara, had served as a factory manager at an optical equipment manufacturer before the war. Driven by the desire to build a business of his own, he entered the airbrush business. This venture laid the foundation for Fuso Seiki Research Institute, established in 1956 and later incorporated as Fuso Seiki Co., Ltd.
In its early years, RichPen airbrushes were used primarily for photographic retouching. Photographs appearing in newspapers and magazines at the time were often carefully retouched with airbrushes. Meanwhile, in 1959, we expanded into the field of automatic spray guns, applying the atomization technology developed for our airbrushes to industrial applications. Today, our LUMINA spray guns are used in factories around the world for painting and a wide variety of liquid coating applications.
More Than an Instrument
Why, then, are we bringing RichPen back to life today?
An airbrush is an instrument that exists at the intersection of beauty and industrial engineering.
Hisashi Sakurada, RichPen's chief designer, first encountered airbrushes at an art supply store when he was barely twenty years old. Behind the glass of a display case, rows of airbrushes lay bathed in light, their metal surfaces gleaming like precious jewels. Decades have passed, but in his memory, they are still shining.
We believe an airbrush should be more than a painting instrument or a precision-engineered industrial product. It should also be a trusted companion that its owner grows attached to—a jewel that inspires a sense of wonder.
For many years, however, that ideal was no longer at the heart of our business.
As Japan entered its era of rapid economic growth, our salespeople traveled from factory to factory across the country, and our business gradually shifted its focus toward industrial spray guns. As the primary use of airbrushes moved from photographic retouching to hobbies and art, our attention remained fixed on factories. Our distribution network for airbrushes gradually diminished. As sales declined, high-end models produced in smaller quantities disappeared from the RichPen lineup, one after another.
Yet throughout those years, we never relinquished our pride in making the finest airbrushes in the world.
The Return of Phoenix
In 2016, Hisashi Sakurada set out to realize an idea he had cherished for years: reviving the discontinued Phoenix 213C.
"I wanted to bring back what the people before us had created," Sakurada recalls.
There was one man in particular on his mind. To Sakurada, he was Oyaji—"the old man."
He was the former head of manufacturing who had taken Sakurada under his wing and nurtured his talents ever since he joined Fuso Seiki.
As price competition intensified and RichPen was forced into retreat, Oyaji could do little but watch in frustration. Sakurada never forgot how deeply it pained him. That same year, Sakurada completed a prototype of the Phoenix 223C.
The Creation of Sirius
If Phoenix represented the revival of a legacy left by our predecessors, Sirius was a pursuit of the RichPen ideal itself—a project to bring the vision of a "jewel-like airbrush" into reality.
This time, Giovanni Costanza joined the project from the United States—a man of extraordinary, almost unreasonable passion. Through countless conversations that stretched late into the night, the Sirius 312S gradually began to take shape.
A faceted cup that catches and reflects the light. An ergonomically designed trapezoidal trigger, shaped to fit the fingertip with remarkable precision and comfort. A distinctive tail design incorporating a trigger tension adjustment mechanism.
Every element was carefully considered. The result was an airbrush into which we poured every idea, every refinement, and every expression of craftsmanship we could conceive.
RichPen Is Ready to Begin Again
With the support of our partners in the United States and other countries, we have rebuilt the distribution channels we once lost. We now have the means to bring what we create, and what we believe in, directly to airbrush users around the world.
RichPen is ready to begin again.
Carrying forward seventy years of history, and working alongside those who share our passion, we turn to a new page.
To create airbrushes that stir the heart.
That is RichPen's mission.
